Q & A with Coach Emily
Q: How did you first start playing water polo?
A: My parents were both competitive swimmers but competitive swimming was definitely not my thing! Water polo was a great way for me to be involved in the aquatic community.
Q: What is it about water polo that made you fall in love with the sport?
A: I love the competition. Also, being part of a strong club culture and team that is working towards a common goal is really special.
Q: What is your favourite water polo memory?
A: Every year at Wagner we would set goals at the beginning of the season. Each year those goals would grow and become more ambitious as the program developed. My freshman season the goal was to win a conference championship. By my senior season the ultimate goal became competing in the NCAA tournament after winning the opening round play-in game. Every year and every team moved the program closer to accomplishing these goals. During my senior season we finally achieved it! We beat the University of California San Diego (UCSD) 9 at home. As a player that moment was the peak of my career. Not only did that win mean the team achieved our goal, but we did something that no other Wagner College team had. This accomplishment was a reflection of the hard work of years of Wagner alumni who kept pushing the program forward.
Q: What made you want to be a coach?
A: Water polo has given me more than I could ever imagine. It had an overwhelming influence on defining me as an individual. Outside of the hardworking nature of the game, it is the teammates and coaches that I was blessed to share experiences with that shaped who I am. As a coach I hope to share this with young athletes today and keep elevating the level of water polo in Edmonton.
Q: Who was your most influential coach?
A: Chris Radmonovich challenged me from the moment I stepped foot onto the Wagner campus. Not only did he push me to be the best athlete I could, but a better student and teammate. He taught me to always take responsibility for my actions and held me accountable to individual and team goals. He leads by example and attacks everything with an unparalleled level of passion. I hope to inspire athletes to work as hard for me as I always wanted to work for him.
Q: Who is an athlete you admire?
A: I have been lucky enough to play with many outstanding athletes and always admire teammates that raised the level of competition in practice and played with passion. As far as a professional athlete, I am a big Ryan Smyth fan.
Q: What is your favourite quote?
A: "Compete."
